CMHA looking for new officials

2022-11-07

Hello CMHA Members,

My name is Curtis Hall. I am the Director of Officiating for CMHA.

We are looking for new officials for the 2022-2023 season. New officials must be a minimum of 12 years of age (as of Dec. 31st, 2022). All ages are welcome, and we are particularly interested in adding female officials to our team.

Officiating is a great part time job for both youth and adults, which can offer many opportunities moving forward. Within the last year, one Hockey PEI official was selected to referee at the Telus Cup Major U18 National Championship, eventually being chosen as one of two referees to work the Gold Medal Game. Additionally, Hockey PEI will be represented this season for the first time in many years in the American Hockey League, as well as the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

While those goals may seem lofty, every year several officials work a variety of provincial, regional, and national championships.

All members are encouraged to give officiating consideration. With some hard work and willingness to learn, anyone who joins could easily officiate the age group below them within one season. There are lots of games to be worked and opportunities to make some money.

If officiating may interest you, the following is a link to the remaining clinics offered by Hockey PEI. New officials are to sign up for a Level 1 clinic. New officials 15 years of age or older may progress to officiating beyond the limits of Level 1 with appropriate development over the course of the season.

CMHA will pay for registration costs of new officials. Simply send me an email indicating the clinic you are signed up for, and indicate Charlottetown as your home association when you arrive to the clinic.

In addition, all new officials must complete the Hockey University online course, which is a short introduction to hockey, officiating, and respect in sport.

If purchasing the necessary officiating equipment to get started (visor, jersey, whistle, black pants) is a financial barrier, please reach out as I can explore avenues to having this equipment provided for those in need.

Officiating is a financially and personally rewarding job that can keep you involved in the game of hockey for many years to come.

If anyone has further questions on officiating, please reach out to me.

Thanks,
Curtis Hall
