2020-03-09

Congratulations to the Abbies on their second tournament win this season!

The Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association would like to congratulate the Bantam A Charlottetown Abbies Team 1 on their tournament win in Saint John, NB this weekend at the Robert Purdy Memorial Hockey Tournament.

The round robin saw the Abbies breeze through with a 3-0 record with 5-1, 12-1, and 8-3 wins. The semi-final against the KV Canadiens was a closer affair with the Abbies earning a hard fought 5-2 victory led by Adam Jay's 3 goal effort and the player of the game Braeden Tompkins' outstanding defensive support. The championship game saw the Charlottetown Abbies take on the Stanley Bulldogs of New Brunswick. The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead in the first period and appeared to be in control of the game; however, the Abbies shifted the momentum in the second period led by team captain Seth Fraser, who scored to cut the lead to 3-1. With the pressure on in the third period, the Bulldogs took two penalties, giving Charlottetown a 5-on-3 advantage. On the powerplay, assistant captain Juan Cifuentes brought the Abbies within a goal. On the same powerplay moments later, assistant captain Adam Jay continued the comeback, knotting the game at 3. With the Abbies assault in full attack, one minute and thirteen seconds later the third assistant captain Zach Zakem netted what would become the game-winning goal. The Abbies were now ahead 4-3. The teams battled back and forth in the last eight minutes, but in the end, backstopped by Peewee AP Thomas Condon, the Abbies held off the Bulldogs and took home the championship!

Congrats on a successful weekend in Saint John!
