Host Central Attack Bantam AAA and Midget AAA Win Spud Tournament

2020-02-05

The Bantam AAA Attack successfully defended their title and the Midget AAA Attack won in overtime.

The Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association would like to congratulate all CMHA teams that participated in the 45th Annual Spud Minor Hockey Tournament. The tournament was, once again, a major success that is our Association's main fundraiser each year.

Atom AAA Charlottetown Abbies
The Atom AAA Charlottetown Abbies played to a 1-2 record over the weekend. They had a tight battle that resulted in a 4-3 loss to Sherwood on the opening night, lost to Truro on Friday, and capped their tournament off with an 8-2 win on Saturday against Sackville.

Peewee AAA Central Attack
The Peewee AAA Central Attack finished the round robin with a 2-1 record. They opened the weekend with back-to-back wins: a 3-0 game against Mid-Isle and a 4-1 game against Riverview. The Attack then played to a 4-0 loss against the Central Icepak; however, the Attack's record was good enough to secure a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately, they were in tough against TASA, losing 4-1 on Saturday afternoon to end their tournament.

Bantam AAA Central Attack
The Bantam AAA Central Attack was the team to beat this weekend in the Bantam division at the Spud. Opening the tournament with two convincing wins - 8-4 over Mid-Isle and 7-1 against Mount Academy - the Attack entered Saturday with momentum they used to beat Truro 4-1. Entering the crossover game as the top seed, the Attack had a tough battle against the Northern Blackhawks. They emerged victorious by a score of 5-3 and began preparing for the final. The championship game against Dartmouth was a tough one. The Attack was down 2-1 by the first intermission. After four goals in seven minutes in the second period, the Attack pushed through to become Spud Champions for the second year in a row.

Midget AAA Central Attack
The Midget AAA Central Attack also battled to a Spud victory this weekend. With a four-team division, we knew it would be a close tournament weekend. The Attack opened with a scrappy 3-2 victory over Pownal on Thursday. They then lost 2-1 to Mid-Isle and beat Kings County 3-0 to wrap up the round robin. The page playoffs ended up working to Central's advantage. The Attack and the Matrix faced off in the one/two seed game for a trip straight to the final. The Attack won 3-2. In the three/four seed game, Kings County knocked Pownal out of the tournament. On Sunday morning it was the Matrix and the Kings fighting for a change to play in the championship game. Mid-Isle emerged with a one-goal victory to set up their third meeting with Central in three days in the championship game. Starting Sunday off fresh was an advantage for Central as they walked away with a 3-2 overtime victory to win the Spud's midget division.
