Remembering Claude Gaston Vaive....

2016-03-16

We have lost another SPUD Tourney founder this week - the Vaive family were solid supporters of Charlottetown Hockey for many years.

In the fall of 1975, the Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association, under its President Ralph Manning, and with the enthusiastic encouragement of Claude Vaive, decided to add Charlottetown to the list of other Maritime centers who had begun hosting successful minor hockey tournaments February 13-15, 1976.

In that first year, 24 teams played at the Charlottetown Forum and Simmons Sports Centre, competing in PeeWee, Bantam and Midget divisions. The tournament was an outstanding success. Following this major effort, there was no question that there was unprecedented momentum to create a new major annual minor hockey tournament in Charlottetown. This new tournament required a unique name, a simple name that would leave no doubt that it was being held on Prince Edward Island. After much discussion the name chosen was “The Spud”.

A number of the original tournament organizers remained with The Spud for a number of years to see it establish itself. Some of those organizers are recognized as being founders of The Spud, they include: Claude and Mary Vaive, Dr. Charlie Brown, Ralph Manning, Ron Atkinson, Charlie Downe, Bill Mulligan, Merlyn Clark, Clee Gillis, Joe Cummiskey, George MacMillan, Keith Beaton, John MacDougall, Bill Griffi n and Rollie Hiltz.

This week, we lost another great legacy in the history of Charlottetown Hockey with the passing of Claude Vaive....
