CMHA Rep Teams - AAA / AA team Tryouts Schedule posted

2015-09-10

CMHA Novice AAs winning the Spud in 2014

Tryouts start the week of Sept 17 - checkout the details and ice time schedule online.

The CMHA will be hosting tryouts for Rep hockey with our AAA & AA teams starting the week of September 17 as per the online schedule here. (Click on the team level for the dates & times for tryouts).

Rep hockey is the culmination of player skills, attitude and desire coupled with the coaching experience, training and dedication to form a CMHA team to play against the best players from other associations at the AAA or AA level. The Rep teams play in a league which permits players to play against players of equal ability. Competitive (rep) hockey requires a much greater commitment from both the player and the parent. For the parents of rep players, there is a much greater financial commitment, plus more driving.

Our coaches for this season are:
Novice AA - Mike O'Meara

Atom AA - Kyle Osmond
Atom AAA - Jeff Squires

Peewee AA - Josh Beaton
Peewee AAA - Jason MacDonald, Nick Hennessey & Jeff Squires

Bantam AA - Jamie Lee & Kory McDougall

Midget AA - Chris MacIntyre
Midget AAA - Jeff MacDonald

FYI - players need to be registered for the CMHA season before taking to the ice for the tryouts - if you have not registered yet, please complete the registration process today online here.

Q: What is a Rep Hockey?
A: The Rep Team or “Representative” Team is the highest level of hockey that can be played within the CMHA.  The Rep team is a “tryout format” in which players/parents must previously register with the CMHA to be eligible to participate.  Most “tryouts” occur prior to the start of the A level hockey from mid September to early October. All Representative teams (AAA, AA) are expected to carry a minimum of fourteen (14) skaters and two (2) goaltenders; if the player registration numbers within any division are limited or excessive in any given year, the Executive may direct an exception to this.

Q: What is the cost to play Rep level hockey?
A: First and foremost there is a fee for Rep tryouts that each team sets and collects at the rink directly.  This one time (yearly) fee covers tryouts for both AAA & AA levels.  Once a player is selected and rostered to either the AAA & AA team, there is a team “rep fee” that covers the cost of weekly full ice practices which will be divided up equally amongst the players.  This is above and beyond the regular CMHA registration fee.

As for fees above this, is dependant on fundraising goals, tournaments, etc that is initiated by the coaching staff; however it is fair to suggest that each team has a fee of approximately $500-$1100 per player that covers expenditures (goalie & power skating sessions, tournaments, team wear, etc).  Throughout the course of the year, each team usually completes sponsorship and fundraising goals, in order to minimize costs.  Although an approximate estimate, AAA & AA could cost $800-$1400 including ALL fees.

FAQ's about Tryouts
Q) Does my child have to attend the Rep Tryouts if he/she wants to play House League?
A) All CMHA players are entitled to play in the House League and no player is required to try out for AAA & AA. Trying out is strictly voluntary.

Q) I have heard that the Rep teams are already picked.  So why should my child tryout when I know he/she will just be cut?
A) Our teams are NOT preselected. Everyone has an equal opportunity to make the team and ensure that team selections are done fairly.

Q) I have heard that playing on the Rep or AAA & AA teams are not fun and that my child probably won’t play much.
A) Our President & Director of Development will be working closely with all of our coaches to ensure that there is a focus on fun and player development.  Your child will play.

NOTE: The CMHA does not promote underage application at the AAA & AA levels. Our guideline is to develop players within their own age group and prepare for a higher level of playing.
