Congrats Kallum Muirhead - former Abbie drafted by Saint John Sea Dogs & Summerside Western Capitals

2015-06-23

Hockey life after the Charlottetown Abbies is just taking off for Kallum Muirhead with his recent drafts in the QMJHL & Maritime Hockey League.

Most kids on P.E.I. start skating long before they become part of a hockey team. That wasn’t the case with Kallum Muirhead. Kallum was what you could call a “late bloomer”. He didn’t start skating until he joined the CMHA in January of his final year of Squirts (Timbits) at the age of 6. So when he dawned the ice, everyone else was already avid skaters, while he was holding on to the boards to get around the rink. Within weeks, the tall lanky 6 year old was skating with the best of them! Then his competitive nature took over.

Kallum’s minor hockey career was with the Charlottetown Abbies until this year when he became a member of the Major Midget Charlottetown Islanders team. As an Abbie, he was a dynamic player. From the beginning he was able to play forward or defense - he could fit in wherever needed. He played both positions in the Novice and Atom levels. In his first Peewee year, he was designated a defenseman until his midget year, where he presently plays as a forward. Kallum is known for being a big skilled competitive player that doesn’t quit; this has served him well so far.

Kallum has had the opportunity to represent his home province of P.E.I. at various tournaments over the years, whether as a CMHA player, member of the Hockey P.E.I. Program of Excellence team, or a member of a spring hockey team with a private hockey school.  He has been recognized with various awards for his efforts on the ice. He has also been honored as a leader, given the captain and assistant captain role on many of his CMHA teams.

The 2014-2015 season has proven to be big year for Kallum despite some injuries. He worked extremely hard to seal a position of the 2015 Canada Winter Games P.E.I. hockey team that traveled to Prince George, B.C. in February. This also secured him a position of the P.E.I. U17 Team that attended the Pre-QMHJL draft Gatorade Excellence Challenge held in Montreal in May. Kallum’s efforts paid off this season seeing him drafted 143rd overall (in the 8th round) in the QMJHL by the Saint John Sea Dogs.  This was followed by the Maritime Hockey League Draft seeing Kallum being drafted 16th overall (in the second round) by the Summerside Western Capitals.

Being drafted into both leagues is obviously a great accomplishment for Kallum and one he will not soon forget. When asked what were some of his favorite memories of being an Abbie, the first one that quickly comes to his mind is being honored with the Jeffrey Mobbs Top Defenseman Award as a novice in the annual SPUD tournament. Another highlight for him as Kallum reflects on his experience is that in every level of hockey he has played as an Abbie, he was a member of a Provincial Championship team. His Novice team won the SPUD followed by “AAA” Atom, Peewee, and Bantam teams winning the provincials in one of his two years. Even at the Midget level, as an Islander, he is currently a member of the Provincial Champion team. That is quite an accomplishment!

As a 6’ 4” sixteen year old, Kallum is training hard, both on and off the ice, over the summer to prepare for the Sea Dogs camp in early August and the Caps in late August. This fall may be the start of a very busy year for Kallum, one he truly cannot wait to get going. Who knows what the 2015-2016 season will bring his way!
